No Evil Project (All Day)
Are you evil? If not, we need your help! Unless you have a secret fortress high in the mountains and are devising nefarious plots to bring about world destruction, you can help with the No Evil Project.  Everyone is different, and that's a good thing.  Everyone is labeled, and despite all the stereotypes out there, you know your labels don't define you.  Your combination of labels is what makes you unique.

This is a community photo project where people like you (and not like you) pick three labels that describe themselves, take photos posing as the three wise monkeys, "see no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil," and write a good thing they've done to show they're not evil. (Simple, right?) The goal?  To show the world that anyone can do good, no matter who they are.

Steam Machine Sculptures (All Day)
Todd Cahill is an artist, mechanical engineer, model builder, and interpreter of the history of technology. He makes exquisite working models of 19th century engines commonly in use during the Industrial Revolution (in which Massachusetts figured prominently). Examples of Cahill's working models include an 1838 Galloway Engine, an 1850s Beam Engine, and a Scottish Table Engine. The equipment he uses to produce his models covers the history of machine tool technology from an 1850s hand cranked metal planer to the more contemporary lathes and milling machines. Cahill is also a fine mechanical draftsman. For twelve years, Cahill 's studio was located in a small mill building along the Blackstone River in Grafton. "Following the practice of the early American industrialists to go where the energy was, I re-located a year ago to the Francis Cabot Lowell Mill in Waltham." A fitting move it was, as this is the site of the very first industrialized textile mill in the country to combine under one roof all the operations necessary to convert raw fiber into cloth. Cahill is a member of the New England Model Engineering Society. In fact, amongst New England model engineers and craftsmen, Todd Cahill has a unique reputation as an unexcelled builder of historically accurate working models, an artist, and as a repository and practitioner of traditional mechanical arts. He is also recognized as an expert in the history of the evolution of steam power -- something of great relevance to the process industrialization in Massachusetts. His meticulously executed working models are informed by his knowledge of mechanical lore.

and the United States.  Known as Zouaves, they were originally
French-Algerian light infantry famous for their colorful Turkish
uniforms, athletic precision drill, and ferocity with cold steel in
battle.  The Salem Light Infantry, an elite militia company from
Salem, Massachusetts, went Zouave in April, 1861.  This demonstration

Learn Victorian Dances with Ruth Levin - Weather Update
Three Dances from Victorian England

Learn three social dances that were popular at balls and gatherings during the Victorian Age. Our al fresco dance party will commence with “The Grand March” which traditionally began events, as the dancers simply marched their way through various patterns allowing them to see who was there that night and what they were wearing! The second dance “Manchester Circle” is an easy circle dance that allows everyone to dance with everyone else in a repetitive circular pattern. “The Gothic Dance” is done in two long lines of dancers whose clasped hands and raised arms mimic the Gothic arches of England’s noble buildings. The dances will be taught by vintage dance instructor, Ruth Benson Levin, who promises a jolly time will be had by all.

Splendid Teapot Racing was conceived by Simone Montgomery in Dunedin, New Zealand and the first public contest was at the 2014 Steampunk NZ Festival in Oamaru. It has since spread to other steampunk groups.  Splendid Teapot Racing involves radio-controlled teapots negotiating an obstacle course within a set time. The vehicle is simply a teapot of the entrants’ choice attached to a radio-controlled car or truck and embellished to taste. Keeping the size of vehicles within the limits stated in the rules helps ensure a fairer and more entertaining contest. The teapot doesn’t still have to function as a teapot!

The Busted Jug Band
The all acoustic Busted Jug Band harkens back to the African-American street bands of the early 20th Century in Southern cities such as Memphis, St. Louis, and New Orleans. These resourceful musical organizations featured homemade and dime store instruments such as the kazoo, washboard and “gut-bucket” (or washtub) bass; alongside harmonica, mandolin, banjo-ukulele, squeeze box and a trunk full of musical oddities and noise makers. These acts were very popular in the 1930s, influenced early Blues and Swing groups, and inspired mainstream novelty acts of the 1940s and 50s such as the Hoosier Hotshots and, most notably, Spike Jones and his City Slickers. The Busted Jug Band's music is a festive romp through time featuring strong group vocals, swinging rhythms, Vaudeville-inspired humor and sharp instrumental work. The group plays music of the classic Jug Bands of Memphis, String Bands of Mississippi, and Swing Bands of the Urban North. These include early Blues and Rhythm & Blues, novelty tunes, standards, New Orleans Jazz and Hillbilly music. The Busted Jug Band pushes the “Jug idiom” beyond it's historical confines. Homemade instruments are used and also modified with modern techniques for maximum impact. Vaudevillian sight gags, bad jokes and colorful stage attire round out the show, and fun reigns supreme.

Contraptions – Bizarre Victorian Inventions
History is full of ingenious inventions.  Progress through civilization has always been fueled by scientists, engineers and inventors. But not all inventions lead to progress.  This presentation highlights some of the most bizarre inventions and ideas to come out of the industrial revolution.  These are the Victorian equivalent of the shake weight or the sham wow.  Though arguably ingenious and creative, these are the Inventions No One Mentions.

The Proper Ladies - Weather Update
Commemorate the 150th anniversary of the publication of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women with songs that were popular when the book was written and when the events took place. Meet Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy, as well as some of the characters created by Ms. Alcott in some of her lesser known works; the heroes and heroines she created in her own fantastic romances.

Enter the world of Louisa May Alcott’s “March Girls,” through the music they knew. "Absence" from the Alcott family collection, the romantic "Meet Me by Moonlight," introduced by a letter from one of the characters in one of the "Comic Tragedies" written by Jo, (Ms. Alcott) and other songs are framed by readings from Louisa’s letters, books and other writings. The Proper Ladies and Louisa May will take you on a visit to Civil War-era New England and the Alcott… er, March family in words and music.

The Gettysburg Address
The Gettysburg Address, the history behind it’s writing, the meaning and philosophy of the words and phrases, and the different versions of the Gettysburg Address.

The words of the Gettysburg Address were spoken from a man who only had a 1st grade education and yet would rise to become the 16th President of the United States.

The words that he chose had the same philosophical intentions as the Declaration of Independence, Mr. Lincoln being a strong believer in not only the Declaration of Independence but also of the Constitution. This same man would one day write the Emancipation Proclamation.

Today, there are only 5 known, authenticated, copies of the Gettysburg Address, Mr. Smith will discuss the history behind its writing, the meaning and philosophy of the words and phrases used, and the different versions.

battle.  The Salem Light Infantry, an elite militia company from

Watch City Adventure Pub Crawl
The Mystery of the Missing Professor

The year is 1905. Last year, it was widely believed that the brilliant Professor Nigel Thurgood, inventor of the Infinity Engine, had been killed under mysterious circumstances. Now, however, whispers abound that the Professor is not dead at all.
Some say that Thurgood was a visionary inventor, others decry him as a madman who contracted with demons to create his many steam-powered inventions. Thurgood certainly kept company with some interesting characters, that much is certain.
Thurgood was deeply involved with two different secret societies. One of them is called Section 12, and the other fashions itself the Ordo Templi Orientis. Both groups have been searching for the professor, and now they need you to unravel the mystery and put the pieces together.
Informational OverviewYou and your fellow pub-crawlers are a team of investigators that have been hired by a young lady named Penelope Primms to investigate the disappearance of Professor Nigel Thurgood, her sometime lover. In order to do so, you will need to speak to various associates he had in two secret organizations. One is called Section 12, the other is called the Ordo Templi Orientis. During your adventure, you will meet a variety of characters from these groups (and perhaps others…) who have different information. You can choose to help them or not help them, and what you choose will impact the outcome of your adventure. The groups despise one another, and will not work together, so you may be asked to choose a side as your adventure progresses.
You may optionally play as a current member of one of these organizations. If you choose to do that, you will have special skills that enable you to gather more information from certain characters.

Emperor Norton's Stationary Marching Band
Emperor Norton’s Stationary Marching Band combines the rich musical history of the circus and the vagabond peoples of Europe with the raw energy of avant-garde jazz, the burning heat of funk and the irreverence and fun of today’s Vaudeville for a sound that is somehow familiar yet like no other. Label them anyway you like! Call them avant world fusion, call them experimental big band, call them gypsy steamfunk, call them circus noise! They may be tough to sum up, but it’s easy to tell you they’ll show you a good time and they’ll get a crowd dancing!
